Summary
At Newsday, I led the development of “Minimonies,” a digital storytelling project that delved into the emerging trend of intimate wedding ceremonies during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recognizing the shift from traditional large-scale weddings to smaller, more personal gatherings, we aimed to present this narrative in an engaging and visually appealing format.
Design Objectives:
Innovative Storytelling:
Create an interactive experience that captivates readers and effectively conveys the essence of minimonies.
Visual Engagement:
Utilize creative design elements to enhance reader engagement and make the story memorable.
Design Process:
Conceptualization:
Collaborated with designer Mark Levitas, who proposed the innovative idea of presenting the entire story on a wedding cake, symbolizing the central theme of weddings.
Design and Development:
Implemented the concept using custom CSS and sticky positioning logic to create a seamless, interactive experience. The project was developed within Newsday’s WordPress-based secondary system, a platform I initially designed and have continuously refined over six years in collaboration with editorial, design, and development teams.
User Experience Optimization:
Ensured the design was intuitive and accessible, allowing readers to easily navigate through the story and engage with the content.
Key Features:
Interactive Design:
The story unfolds as readers scroll, with each layer of the wedding cake revealing new information, creating a dynamic and immersive experience.
Responsive Layout:
Designed to function seamlessly across various devices, ensuring a consistent user experience.
Outcome:
The “Minimonies” project received positive feedback for its creative approach to storytelling and its ability to engage readers through innovative design. By combining compelling visuals with interactive elements, we effectively highlighted the shift towards intimate wedding ceremonies during the pandemic.
